Elkington Silver Plated Egg Coddler

Postby enorthington » Thu Apr 02, 2015 12:00 am

Hi, This is my first post and I've spent hours reading about silverplate as I wanted to find out about this object that I found at the thrift store today. It is an Egg Coddler on an egg plate (who knew such a thing existed). I've not been able to find any others like this on the internet though who knows if I'm searching for the right thing. I've found other Egg Coddlers though.

I think I've sorted that it is from Sheffield England by Elkington. I think it is from before 1898 (though I'd be very surprised as this cleaned up really nicely and doesn't look that old). Apparently in "1898 the "crown" was deleted when the Parliament forbade its use on silverplate wares to prevent abuses and misunderstandings with the "crown" symbol of the Sheffield Assay Office (reserved to hallmarking sterling silver items)." I'm needing help figuring out the year this is from. There is an M on it but the hallmark doesn't look like the pictures of other Elkington hallmarks to me. Any help would be much appreciated as I'm interested to find out more or if I'm completely off base on this. Thanks so much!

Apologies... one more update - I don't think this is from Sheffield - I thought the S above the hallmark meant Sheffield, but I'm thinking it doesn't now after reading a bit more...

Thanks again!

It look to me the M is for 1873, Elkington used date letters on their silver plated ware
