Help...Cannot find this mark anywhere

Postby silversurfer2 » Tue Jul 01, 2014 11:37 pm

Hi All,

I have searched extensively for this mark and cannot locate its owner.

This is a beautiful, heavy, footed, handled butler tray with only one stamp that says "Sheridan Silver" with 2 dots above the I.

Thank you for your help. Would also like to know its age if possible.

Hi ~ welcome to the forums. It was made by silverplate manufacturer Sheridan Silver Co. of Taunton, MA. they were in business from 1946, with Taunton Silversmiths from 1973, but the 'Sheridan Silver' name was still used, with the sans-serif 'SHERIDAN' trademark registered in 1974, noted as in use from 1947. Their lines were usually sold through department stores, jewelers, etc., they were still in business several years ago, and may still be...

Hi Dragonfly,

Thank you very much for your reply....can you direct me to a picture of this particular stamp as belonging to the Sheridan Co.?

I still have not been able to find it...I see several of these trays...but none of them have this particular stamp. I also find it odd that a trema or umlaut is used in the name, would you know why? That is traditionally European.

Thank you,
S S

Hi, not sure if you believe your item was made by other than the company referenced, but have seen the mark before, and it is, quite simply, the company's name - a quick internet search also finds the same tray with more common Sheridan marks (see no logical reason for a diaeresis over the 'I', most likely just a coincidental flaw in the die). Keeping in mind that there are usually numerous variants in manufacturer's marks, as mentioned, Sheridan Silver Co. registered a simple sans-serif 'SHERIDAN' trademark in 1974, noting use since 1947:

Hi Dragonfly,

Thank you! That is very helpful. It is so frustrating not to be able to find something.

Have a great evening!
