Christofle with "fish head" pattern

Postby Grasshopper » Thu Jun 05, 2014 7:22 pm

Hello:

I have 12 knives & 12 forks marked "Christofle", with a "fish head" design that I can't find anywhere. Unfortunately, the items also have engraved initials (ER) on the handles. There is a maker's mark on the back that is difficult to see, but I'm pretty sure it is one shown in the box of "hard to date" marks in the bottom right hand corner of the article titled "Christofle: An Historical Outline " (on this website under French Hallmarks), written by 2209Patrick. It's the mark in the upper left-hand corner of the box.

Photos of these items can bee seen at: https://www.flickr.com/photos/124480253@N08/

I'd truly appreciate some help in identifying the pattern and maker!

Your silverplated individual fish service was made by Christofle. It didn’t have a pattern name but was called only couverts à poisson (fish service). This was not a full-line pattern, and no serving pieces were made. The pattern was registered and first appeared in the company’s catalogue in 1902. See David Allan, Le couvert & la coutellerie de table française du XIX siècle, p.80. I don’t know how long the pattern was produced, but it is no longer in production. The monogram in no way detracts from this service.

Hope this helps.

That is exactly the kind of info I was hoping to discover! I just don't have the right camera equipment to get a better photo of the markings. It is pretty cool! I haven't seen anything else like it. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply!
