Need help to identify this "sheild" Sheffield England

Postby londonsw2 » Tue May 06, 2014 7:24 am

Hello,
I am trying to identify the "sheild" symbol within the set of rubbed hallmarks. The only information I have uncovered so far is from the British registry date which is stamped within the handle. It indicates these scissors were registered as metal on the 20th July 1861. With the crown being present I am led to believe these were made in Sheffeild.

Despite the hallmarks being rubbed I believe, though I could be wrong, the first symbol is the duty mark laying on its side, then the sheild, makers mark, crown and then the date. Admittedly its best guess but if any of you guys could help I would be grateful.

Many thanks

The images are fine for me provided the link is cut and pasted into the url bar.

In this case the crown is misleading and is not the Sheffield Assay Office mark. Your scissors are plated; I'm sure the mark has cropped up in one of these forums but I can't find it quickly. Maybe somebody else remembers it...

Dear all,

Thank you for your help, it is greatly appreciated.

Oel: I apologise for the lack of images, I pressed the submit button by mistake and had contacted admin to see if I could delete my post earlier today. I got very confused but have taken your information for future use :)

Phil: Despite now learning I bought a plated pair of scissors that were listed as sterling, I am greatful for the information you have given me. I really appreciate it. Thank you.

Regards

Roy
