I wonder if anyone can help me. I have a flat dish with a scalloped edge about 6" diameter but I am not sure if it is silver or plate.
The hallmark is as follows (reading left to right):
Maker (who I have identified) is John Sherwood &Sons, mark is in an upright position
Next to that is a beaver
Next to that is a crown (rubbed at top right corner)
There is no letter mark at all
Stamped below these marks is the number 9871
Stamped above the marks is a shield with a diagonal sash on it running from top left to bottom of right hand side of the shield.
I have read that JS&S used these marks pre 1897 for plate but I have seen no mention of the number or shield. Also there is the absence of a letter which could have worn away but I don't think so as there is not even a faint impression of a mark.
I would be really grateful if anyone could shed some light on this!
Many thanks
