Noob w/Danish mark q

Postby houseofcharm » Sun Jul 14, 2013 2:56 pm

Hello all, 1st posting here & happy to be part of the forum. We're 40+y.o.

Fancy monograms on the flipside of a crown and superimposed 'MS'. I'll post a photo when I get close to a camera.

Any ideas at this point sans photo? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

That appears to be Danish silverplated ware.

See here for the two towers mark used from the 1890's until the 1930's: http://www.925-1000.com/dm_Assay.html

'P' = Plet (Plated). I'm unsure of the maker.

Sorry I joined! Only kidding, this is the one deal we made with our exporter colleague/friend I think where we got taken. Will look deeper into it but we paid lots of kroner about 1980-82 for this set. Ir feels warm and oily like silver, not cold & dry like plate but has hardly tarnished in 30 years in zip locks in a TWA bag in a safe.

If we override your feelings and see what the marks show. The capital P stands for the Danish word "PLET" meaning plate in English! Danish plate is also marked with a mark with two towers. Take a look at the mark on the right. How many towers do you see in the mark ?

Sorry my good man not silver. Danish silver is usually marked with a three tower mark.

Sure looks like it-I need a new acid kit to check some other pieces also.

Oddly, the handles are hollow which further led me to think they were silver. I guess 30 years later is too late to go after the seller...!

Thanks for the guidance.
