Tea-strainer unknown master

Postby silverfan » Sat Mar 30, 2013 6:14 pm

Hi all,
recently I got a tea-strainer marked Bachmann or Lachmann and AS 1861. I don't know if it is silver nor even if it comes from Germany. Any hint welcome.

Well Silverfan I think you know that those are not silver mark. No hints but cold facts:
Your strainer is plated and made by Wenzel Bachman in Vienna, Austria founded 1842. "AS" is an abbreviation standing for "Alpacka Silver" and trade mark for "A Schoeller & Co, Berndorfer Mertallwaren Fabriken". 1861 in most like the production date. Alpacka is an alloy of copper, nickel, zinc and some antimony (not always). In Germany called Neusilber and elsewere NickelSilver. Objects made of this alloy are often silverplated and could carry the very well known marks EPNS i.e. ElectroPlated NickelSilver.

Hello Qrt.S,
Thank you for your quick answer. I supposed it to be plated, but wasn't sure. In the Internet I found out that the company was even court supplier with plated flatware. Some items bear the Habsburg eagle. So it is good quality.
