New Tin

Postby daez » Thu Jan 17, 2013 8:48 pm

I received a silver tin, with a lid, but am unable to identify what the stamps are on the bottom. i can make out it was made in england, it has the numbers 2802 on it, but the smaller stamps are harder to read, they look like,
top row M W ? W
middle row S
Bottom Row E or F ? R M

can anyone help?

Hi Daez,

Welcome to the forum. Please try to make a photo of the stamps, although I believe it not to be silver hallmarks, "a clear photo is worth a thousand words"

Hi,

The maker was Marples, Wingfield & Wilkins (Charles Marples, Walter Talbot Wingfield, and Harry Wilkins), Sykes Works, 148, Eyre Street, Sheffield.

Marples, Wingfield & Wilkins appear to be the successors to Marples & Co. of Sheffield, who were a wholly owned subsidiary of Martin, Hall & Co. Ltd. Harry Wilkins was noted as the managing director of Martin Hall & Co. Ltd in 1903.

Marples, Wingfield & Wilkins was recorded as being in business as from c.1908 until the 1950's or so, although they are thought to have ceased silver plating, probably to concentrate on the manufacture of essential war materials, in c.1940. Their name was struck off the Board of Trade Companies Register on the 29th September 1964.

Whites Directory of Sheffield & Rotherham of 1911 has Harry Wilkins listed as both electro plate manufacturer (Marples, Wingfield & Wilkins) and as managing director (Martin Hall & Co. Limited). Presuming the directory information is correct, then perhaps Marples, Wingfield & Wilkins was a subsidiary of Martin, Hall & Co. Ltd. as was their predecessors, Marples & Co. I say "Presuming the directory information is correct", as the information regarding Wilkins's residence differs on both entries, of course, he may have had two residences, or moved during the course of that year, or it is possible that the directory was using earlier information as the detail of Wilkin's involvement with Martin, Hall & Co. Ltd. is exactly the same as was recorded in their 1905 edition.

any ideas on how to find out when this one was made, i have never looked into this sort of thing before. i figured the number 2802 underneath the "made in england" stamp might mean something.

see;

The number might be a factory design/inventory number.
