Christofle date

Postby larrywseale » Mon Oct 08, 2012 3:44 pm

I'm a little confused. I have a boxed Christofle VERDOME fork & spoon with Pavillion de Hanovre on the box. As far as I can tell, Christofle sold the showroom in 1931. The marks on the fork and spoon date the pieces to 1935 or later according to the Christofle page here on 925-100.

Any thoughts? Thanks

Hi Larry,

I think you should always allow a little leeway with the dates attributed to silverplate marks. To my knowledge the Pavillon de Hanovre was demolished in the early years of the 1930's, and I suspect, but I'm only guessing, that the 1935 date attributed to the first use of that mark, was perhaps because its appearance was first illustrated in the Christofle catalogue of that year, but as stated, this is just speculation on my part. Most sources give 1935 for its first use, but I think you have proved that its first use was somewhat earlier, assuming, of course, that your flatware is in its original box, and has not gotten swaped around over the years.

Thanks Trev.

I assumed it was the original box because the silk was "indented" where the pieces has been for a while but of course, it's just an assumption on my part :-)

Perhaps, you can offer an opinion about my other weekend "find" that I'll post in a couple of minutes, Also French.
