What is this?!

Postby n_lewellen » Sun May 06, 2012 10:53 pm

I have 4 of these, each with the initials TCC and years on the front. One has 1948-49, another has 1949-50, another: 1950-51, and another: 1951-52. I've been told they are wine coasters, but I'm more interested in what they're made from. Silver, sterling silver, nickel? The markings on the back are probably what will identify them the best, but as off yet, I haven't found a match on this site. Each little plate is 3 inches in diameter. The TCC on this one is the only one that has the doodads on the top and bottom and the 3 dots on either sides. On the one with 1950-51, the TCC is engraved in print, and not the script you see in the pic. The bottom of each one has the same markings, with one minor difference. They all say Old English Reproduction, they all have AVL inside a diamond in the center, they all have EPZN, the "S" inside the elongated hexagon, but the tiny number beside that is different on a couple of them. The one with 1951-52 is as shown with a very tiny 3. The one with 1948-49 has a 1 in that location, and the other two have a 4 on them.

Any and all information I can get on these items would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello,

I assume these are Electro Plated Zinc, that is to say that zinc would be the base metal, coated with a deposit of silver.

I would describe them as coasters, rather than wine coasters, at that size they are more suitable for a glass rather than a bottle. These look like they may be the sort thing presented to members of a cricket club following a successful season.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

The maker may possibly be the Canadian company Benedict Proctor Mfg. Co. The often used a diamond mark, and also the term 'Old English Reproduction'.

The AVL may have something to do with name Avalon?
