Antique cruet set marks ID help please

Postby Madhatterrus » Tue Oct 18, 2011 6:35 pm

Hi all,

I bought a cruet set recently thinking it was just silver plated, but I've found some marks that look similar to English hallmarks though not standard, so it seems. I would really appreciate any help with identification of this piece.

On the inner part of the base there are three marks: a Gothic letter, a crown that looks similar to Sheffield mark but there are some rubbed letters under the crown, and N in a lozenge.
There are letters SS on one leg and a number 2688 on another.
The mustard pot is fully hallmarked, but I can only make out a letter C and a maker's mark H M. The hallmarked top of the pot seems to be original.
The set is crested with five feathers above a coronet.

The cruets are hand-blown and have pontil marks so I suppose the set is quite old anyway, but I'm really curious to learn more about the unusual marks on it and if the stand could be solid silver. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
