Hi,
A friends mother purchased a Fürst Besteck silverware set from Solingen Germany in the 1960s and is wondering if it is sterling silver. At the time of the purchase she was under the impression that it was sterling, yet at this time she is not sure. Do you guys know? I searched this site and have looked everywhere but cannot find anything.

What is the meaning of the numbers 90-20, 90-35 and 90-18? Also, I tested them with a magnet and the 90-20 knife handles are completely nonmagnetic, the other items are somewhat magnetic. The stainless steel knife blades are VERY magnetic. Thanks for your help!

Not sterling or the likes

I'm afraid the number 90 indicates clearly that these items are electroplated: 90 grams pure silver were used to make one set (12 forks, 12 knives, 12 spoons). The other numbers indicate how much silver was used for a set of these alone (for example a "20" on the forks means 20g for 12 forks). These are not hallmarks, just marks to help the buyer.

However, this is a nice 60's item and Fürst is good quality!
