British Tea Set - help with markings please?

Postby krnpeters » Wed Mar 23, 2011 7:20 pm

We've been told that the tea set came from Buckingham Palace. I'm trying to identify the markings. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Attached are pictures of the creamer. There is the initial B and the date June 6, 1912 engraved on each piece. I don't know of any significance of this date. It does correspond to the time that a family member was working in London, and staying near Buckingham Palace. The only hallmark I can identify is the lion passant. I've not seen any of the others.

The markings looks to me like the Barbour Silver Co, with the BCEP meaning Barbour Company Extra (or electro) Plate. The 8300 would be the pattern number.
They would date between 1892 (its founding) and 1898 (its absorbtion into International Silver). The inscription of 1912 wouldn't relate to the manufacture date.
As to the Buck House reference? No clue I'm afraid.
Hope this helps

I believe the Barbour name was still used by International Silver for many years.

Hi John,

I just came across this reference that the Barbour name was in use until 1931.

See Pat's post in: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=21933&p=51423
