Unidentified Markings, heavy tray

Postby mishanne » Thu Nov 18, 2010 1:17 pm

Hi! I have this gorgeous tray that you will see in the pictures. I tried looking for the markings online but all I could find is that it could probably be Birmingham Silver Company. I am not sure of this as I haven't been able to find the exact markings, in that same order. The tray is footed (I put a picture of it) and it's really heavy, around 10 pounds. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would like to know if it's silverplated or not, what does the markings mean and the year of the item. Thanks so much! (Sorry if it's posted in the wrong section.)

Hi,

Yes that is the Birmingham Silver Co.Inc. of Yalesville, Connecticut. See: http://www.925-1000.com/silverplate_B2.html

Formerly known as the Goldfeder Silver Co., the changed their name to Birmingham Silver Co. c.1957, so your tray can be dated to after that event.

As a rule of thumb, if it is not marked sterling/925, then it's not.

Hi,

I should add that the Birmingham Silver Co. did manufacture both sterling and plated wares. As your tray does have a partial mark struck beneath the maker's mark then it is worthy of further investigation. It may be just a model number, but.....
