Marks on Old Butter Knife

Postby gelert » Wed Sep 01, 2010 2:10 pm

I have an old butter knife with a sliver blade, quite ornate, with a wooden handle, carved with the Welsh word "Ymenyn," which translated into English, means butter. Can anyone help me with the marks on the back of the knife? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Gelert,

Welcome to the Forum.

It's not a hallmark, I'm afraid, but the letters EPNS, that stand for Electro Plated Nickel Silver.

Of course there is always the possibility that it's a Welsh abbreviation for 'hold at other end'.

Thank you very much, Trev, for your post. It satisfied my curiosity about the stamps on the knife and kindness.

Pieces such as these usually have there origins in, maybe Sheffield, but more likely Birmingham. They would have been sold, uncarved, to someone in Wales with a cottage industry carving such pieces and then selling them as souvenirs to Victorian tourists.

Thank you again, Trev, for that information. I enjoy learning about "things" in my life. Your kindness is greatly appreciated.
