Nice looking piece - where are the marks placed? Any chance of a photo of the complete object?

My feeling is that 84 represents the silver purity using the Zolotnik system, corresponding to 87.5% purity. This would tend to suggest north east Europe - perhaps not Russia itself but one of the smaller surrounding countries?

Not really my area, but the makers mark with "84" in the square lozenge indicates that the piece is French silverplate.

another pic

Postby Eugueni » Thu Dec 15, 2005 8:39 am

Here is another pic of the whole item (I have 40 pieces with this hallmark).
I am suprised to learn that it may be french with 84 zolotnik...
Also I see something above the two letters R.C...it seems a crown or clover.
Sorry for my english...

The position of the marks on the front of the bowl strongly confirms Dragonflywink's suggestion of French silver-plate.

In this case 84 would indicate the number of grams of silver used to plate a certain number of pieces. Often smaller pieces such as teaspoons etc would require less grams of silver and be marked accordingly.

Porret certainly has a French ring to it too!

There seems to be little information on French silverplaters, appart from companies still now in existance.

However, many silverplaters also made solid silver objects as well. So one possibility is:

Ravinet & Cie, Temple (rue du), Paris, in operation from at least 1912 to at least 1923. For silver objects their mark was "R&Cie" with "un trèfle" - this does sound close to the clover mark!

YES!!! YES!!! YES!!!

There is an identical canteen on the internet ascribed to RAVINET D'ENFERT - presumably the same as the above. No details of the marks - however the pattern is the same!

Somewhere I believe I may have some info on RAVINET D'ENFERT, I´ll look next week
