identifying marks on wine taster

Postby scout » Sun Dec 11, 2005 1:38 pm

I have a wine taster which I suspect is French from info I have read. It belonged to my grandfather so I believe it may go back to early 20c but do not know for certain. 1st mark is a 5 point star inside a square surrounded by letters (clockwise from 12 oclock)- E A J M P. 2nd mark , also square has 8 & letter G.
I would be grateful if anyone can help me identify origin or age of this item.
Thank you

Dear Scout,

If there are no marks like a mercury's head or a boar's head, it is not silver but plated silve which is confirmed by the shape of the maker's mark. By law, in France maker's marks for plated silver have to be in a square shape. I shall try to find who the maker can be and revert.

Best regards

Many thanks
