Makers Marks / Item Name

Postby Artemus » Wed Apr 07, 2010 5:23 pm

Hi,
Have a mysterious item here, located in Scotland. I assume that Silverplate and Electroplate are the same thing?

Other than the two photos below showing the item and makers marks, there are apparent marks scratched into surface nears the MMs. They are "J3435" and what could be described as the number 2 with an additional line extending diagonally from the top left hand of the character followed by the + symbol.

Have researched this to death, no luck. Any help would be appreciated, even what this item would be named.

Looks to be Boardman, Glossop & Co, Clarence Works, Sheffield.

The item is a biscuit barrel.

Hello

Welcome here!

Information given from user701 are very helpful and correct.

It's amazing me, how you've studied before your question and has made detailled sketches - including some remarks on little details.

This helps a lot! There fore, thank you too!

»B & G« is already explained by user701.

»GS« in an oval could be - also in this case - indication for basic material is used for the body = German Silver = Nickel Silver

»EP« in a briquettes shape signification is Electro Plated.

The numerical, e.g. 3732 is maker's model number - the other would maybe have same function for a variation, like another cap?

You know, biscuit don't remain crispy if he is in permanent contact with a humid atmosphere.

The Damascus-style of the shell was rolled on before mounted (soldered); and then after the whole was plated, well the cap separately.

My esteem is that your box is made end of 19 century - it seems, remained until now young and without wrinkles.

Kind regards silverport
