Sheffield Plate Rare Dixon Mark

Postby mrclose » Tue Mar 30, 2010 11:53 pm

Hi Everyone!

New to the forum but thought that some here might like this piece of information.

Took me a year and the sending of lots of pictures to The Silver Vaults, in London to get this confirmed as to maker.

It is James Dixon and is true Sheffield Plate.

My question is Why don't you see this mark, (see photo) on the various reference marks pages?

A year could not be pinned down, best guess was sometime around 1835.

It is also listed in the Sheffield Plate Marks section of the "English Silver Hallmarks" pocket guide edited by Judith Bannister . Date given is 1835.

Thank you for looking and for your replies.

You can't tell it by the pictures, (haven't polished the kettle for over a year) but the thing is in 'mint' shape!
Not a ding and not a loss of silver anywhere. (well, maybe on the bottom) lol

For something that is getting close to the two hundred year old mark .. I find that amazing.

Hi MC,

Welcome to the Forum.

You should have come here first! As the other guys have stated, this mark is well documented.

But your question is "Why don't you see this mark on the various reference marks pages?". The answer is that we are dependant on members, such as yourself, to post clear images of such marks, so that they can be added to the reference pages. I've no doubt, in the fullness of time, that your image will fill that gap, so thank you and we hope you will enjoy your time on the Forum.

Thank You for the welcome Trev!

I have no doubt that this forum is going to be fun and it will be a place that I will visit regularly.

A question?

I notice that there are two different pictures of the D*S mark .. a small one and a large one.

Do the two different sizes mean anything?

Thanks

Hi Paul,

Not that I'm aware of, perhaps the three individual ones were used when working the mark into patterned pieces, or maybe the group mark was merely a replacement punch, but this is just speculation on why part. Hopefully someone else has a better idea.

Regards Trev.
