I've searched but, can't find these marks

Postby tamarareyna » Wed Mar 10, 2010 8:56 am

I don't know what country this is from or if it's sterling or plated so I'm posting here. I've looked through the website and can't find these marks anywhere. I've tried to google "Cross" along with severl different keywords but, I just kept getting things to do with silver crosses. So, I need help in identifying these marks and if it's plated or not. Thanks for any help given.

Nice old silverplate cocktail shaker (needs polishing though). The maker is E.G. Webster & Son of Brooklyn, NY, it also bears a retailer's mark for Mark Cross.

Mark Cross was a maker and retailer of high end leather goods, they also retailed a fair amount of smaller household items, branded by them, but made by other firms. The company was founded in the 1840's in England, like Gucci and Hermes, they originally specialized in saddles, harnesses and other equestrian goods. You can read an interesting 1951 magazine article regarding the company and view a number of their 20th century magazine ads here.

Should have mentioned that they started using the lion logo in 1924.
