sugar tongs hall marks ID

Postby silveraussie » Sat Nov 28, 2009 7:59 pm

i've been serching this site & others to find the origen of these hallmarks on some sugar tongs i picked up, i'm sure they are solid silver as the engraving on them is quite deep & has struck no base metal, i'd say there mid to late 1800s by the syle & engraving, i bught these in Australia.
the first mark is " A&D " i'm unsure of the next mark & the last mark is an hour glass.

Hi,

Sorry if I disappoint you, but they are maker's marks rather than hallmarks as your tongs are silver plated.

The makers are Charles James Allen and Sidney Darwin, Portland Works, 55, Arundel Street, Sheffield.
