2 Match Box Covers Silver/Silverplate? ID help for marks req

Postby jekyll » Sat Nov 19, 2005 2:11 pm

I have two match box covers as shown below but have had no luck in identifying the source of the marks. Both are badly tarnished but I hesitate cleaning them until I know for certain that they are silver/silverplate.

The first box has a floral motif (very hard to see with all the tarnish):

It is marked with a shield divided into three parts. I can not make out the upper left mark (could be a rooster or a lion set at an angle), the second section holds crossed keys and the bottom, third section could be a 'P' or an 'F':

The second box has a hinged lid with a carriage pulled by horses, 4 riders and is inscribed 'London' within the design:

The mark is a rather primitive, simple looking shield with crossed keys:

I can find no other marks on either box. I've searched marks til I'm dizzy so any help to send me in the right direction would be very much appreciated.

The second piece, with the crossed keys - while "crossed keys" are a very popular silverplate mark, they could be the mark of H. Wilkinson & Co, Sheffield makers. However, this is a rough guess at best.
