Unknown manufacturer - silver plated spoon with gold wash

Postby Ag-novice » Sun May 03, 2009 3:19 pm

As a novice, I am asking you for help.
I have a large silver-plated spoon with a gold wash.
It has a single letter monogram "F".
On the back, PAT. 1900 and "Morris & Gregg" appear but no other marks.
It seems that there was an earlier name before, very hard to read, but something the like of " F..MAN".

I would very much appreciate your help in identifying this piece.

Thanks very much!

Hello

Sorry I’m not specialized in American cutlery at all. But I’ve some in my collection — Plated and Sterling. For that reason I couldn’t tell you who «MORRIS & GREGG» was and where.

Because you are «novice» I tell you some common ground in cutlery: The bowl has a «gold wash» because she was gilded — maybe only inside = face side. Reason: use for stewed fruit or whipped cream.

«PAT. 1900» is maybe only a kind of «Stop thief! » the thief screams out who run away! In this case it’s maybe only an indication for a very little own invention in the plate production process? Applied for in «Patent Office» in year 1900?

The puncher an apprentice (?) who has set the company’s name started first 180º top down and has stopped in between his stroke — that’s the «echo» you interpreted as «F..MAN». He turned the object and finished.

Why there are no many more marks? In 1900 America was less mark addict then British buyers.

Excuse my mistakes in writing — I’ve had only 15 hour lessons 60 years ago.

Good luck in yours future collector’s life!

Kind regards silverport

P.S. I’ve observed «925-1000» forum correct? By my notice you come out of the «Black Forest» now near to the top position — and between the «only news-addicted» forum members could be one who could give you knowledge to «MORRIS & GREGG»? I hope so!
