help to identify marks on silver platter cover

Postby Mr. Jim » Thu Jan 22, 2009 4:57 pm

Hi I am new to this forum & I have a Silver Platter cover that is dome shaped w/ a removable handle(Held in place with a silver Thumb screw)
It measures 15.5" long, 12.5" wide, it is 7" deep & 9.5" tall to the top of the handel. the inside has small hammer marks used to form the shape. this has belonged to my Grandmother for as long as I remember. I have looked in every book I can find to identify the marks to no luck I've been looking for about a year now & have had no luck. The marks are worn from polishing so they are hard to make out. I was hoping that someone here could help me figure out what the marks represent & where I may find any info about the maker. I will always keep this since it was my MAMA'S. But sure would like to know more of its origin. I took the best pictures I could of the mark, Hope it shows up
thanks in advance for any help provided
Jim

Hello Jim and welcome to the forum.

Those are silverplate marks.
They were used by John Harrison located at Norfolk Works, 116-122 Scotland Street, Sheffield England.
The NW stands for Norfolk Works. The letters in the shield to the right are "EP", which stands for "ElectroPlated".
Your marks were used from 1843 - 1865.

He was the first to start electroplating in Sheffield England ( 1843 ).
Firm became " & Co." in 1866. Became "Ltd." in 1873.
Taken over by Richard Richardson in 1891.

Wow Thanks for the quick response I never would have figured out the "EP" part. & The "H" looked like a griffin of some kind, this explains why I could not locate any info in the Books I have.
Does anyone know what this would have been used for? I assume a platter cover of some sort. Do you think it may have had a platter that matched it ?
Thanks agian I would have answered sooner but I have been having computrer problems. I will pass the info onto the family
Jim
Also Thanks for the welcome Nice group here
