Tiny Pair of Spoons

Good Morning --

These tiny spoons, 3.75 inches long, have gilded bowls (I think, sorry they are tarnished, I also need to know how to clean they correctly), a lion on the handle, and a string of marks. Maybe Charles Shipway? Maybe not! Could not apply all the marks anywhere. Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Diane

I believe that's a silverplate mark of the Army & Navy Cooperative Society Ltd.

Hello, I just got hold of an interesting fish knife and I think the image of the finial marks could be useful to go with this oldish post.





We have A&N, CS and L the fairly standard set of Army& Navy Cooperative Stores electroplate marks. I believe the “L” represents their London base, but we have an additional maker’s mark of “D&A”. Obviously the Army& Navy Cooperative Stores (ANCS) were retailing this knife for the prolific Birmingham, mainly electroplating, Company of Daniel & Arter. There are plenty of posts mentioning D&A on the forum, but for dating think, start late 19th century, out of business 1930’s. My synopsis for “ANCS” is, started before “D&A”, changed name to “Army&Navy Stores Ltd” mid 1930’s and taken over mid 1970’s. There is a floral patterning to the to blade front of my knife so it is likely it was retailed around the 1890 -1910 period but below is a reference to a fairly modern view of “ANCS”.
