I am stuck and can't grasp the concept of how to figure out when this item was made. I know it is made by Wurttembergische Metallwaren Fabrik (what a mouthful) as it has the W over MF mark. The only other two marks are what appears to be a capital "N" and "1,5" on opposite sides of the makers mark. Good thing I knew it was German or I'd be completely lost because it doesn't have the Germany marks on it. Please point me in the right direction. Thank you so much.

The images of your piece are no longer online, and you don't give a description of what it was, but I'm going to guess it was some sort of pitcher or bowl because the "1,5" would refer to the volume of the object, in liters. This often?/always? means the piece was "hotelware." I have a couple of examples...

The largest I have is a 1.5 liter WMF Cromargan (stainless steel) "milk frothing jug":


The smallest I have are 0.02 liter pitchers for an individual serving of cream, one in Cromargan and the other silver plate:

Well, duhh. I just looked at the title and see it refers to a letter opener. I have no idea what these numbers mean in regard to a piece lacking "volume." Sorry.
