Hello. That silverplate mark was used by John Nowill & Sons, Sheffield, England. In business at least into the 1960's. Your mark is one of their early marks.

I don't believe the A is a date mark. Dates marks were not required on British silverplate. A or A1 is often used on silverplate to imply quality or thickness of plating. Has no real significance, just a marketing device.
