Identification Help Needed for Italian Mark on Cruet Set

Postby rdb7302 » Tue Apr 15, 2008 6:41 pm

I've found myself in possession of a cruet set from Italy. As I am tolally lost when it comes to Italian marks, I'm really hoping someone can help identify the maker. I was unable to get clear picture of the mark with my camera, and the one attached is a blown up pic from my scanner. It, too, is very bad, so I have included a pencil sketch next to the scanned image to help clarify the mark. I do know the star on the mark dates the piece (I believe) after 1938, and the P M indicates the area in which it was made, but that is the extent of my knowledge. Since no number can be found anywhere on the piece, I am assuming it is silverplate. Has anyone got any other ideas?

hello I'm italian and I'm sorry but I 'm sure it is not silver, becuose it is neccesary "number of standard silver"(800 or 925 for italy in every silver), the mark "ITALY" is impossible in antique and in vintage silver(in the modern silver is possible "made in italy" whit alwais 800or 925)
from 1872 to 1934 there is only "800" with or without markers mark
from 1934 to 1944 there is 800 with "LOSANGA DEL FASCIO"
from 1944 to 1970 there is 800 or 925 with "LOSANGA" without fascio littorio
after 1970 there is 800 and another tipe of losanga with a star!
p.s:losanga is a little poligon with 2 number and 2 letter

Thank you for all of the information. It is very helpful. I knew it was not Sterling when there was no number to be found, so I assumed it is silverplate. It does polish very nicely. The most disappointing thing you pointed out is that there is no "PM" listed on the Province list. If this piece is silverplate and not Sterling silver, could the "PM" indicate the maker instead of a province?

I am happy to help you! there is a good news:your silverplate was made around 1940-1950(in my opinion),is vintage and your silverplate is beautiful and pleasant. However italian marker's marks are hard to find!
if you have another silver i will give you my opinion.

Italian Marks

Postby rdb7302 » Tue May 06, 2008 5:08 pm

Again, you have confirmed my feelings about this set, Gardoni. I felt this set was from the 1950s, but so far, I still have not found any more information. I do not know why Italian marks are so difficult to find. I guess records of marks were not considered important for a long time. It is a real shame, since there appears to be quite a bit of Italian work on the market. I will keep in touch. Thanks again!
