Markstroms Swedish Silver Tastevin or Wine Tasting Spoon

Postby cbella » Thu Mar 13, 2008 1:57 am

I have a Swedish sterling spoon used for barrel tasting, or by a sommelier.
It is dimpled in the cup and hangs from a leather cord. The marks are many. They are all in boxes. First is MARKSTROMS. Then, as follows: EX PR ALP N5 (Thought at first this was NS, but, after looking at a date list, it seems to be N5, which means made in 1867) I have read that K.G.MARKSTROMS was silversmith to the Swedish Court. Was this King Christian IX ? If anyone knows the meanings of the marks, I'd appreciate the info. Thanks.

Your spoon is unfortunately not silver but alpacca and it is electroplated with a thin silver. The last mark is actually NS. The marks means the following:
- EX - Extra
- PR - Prima
- ALP - Alpacca
- NS - Nysilver (meaning plated).

The spoon is neither from 1867 but from the 20th century.

Regards,
Juhana

I dont know Markstroms and his relation to the swedish kingdom but Christian IX was a danish king.
