Martin Hall Sheffield EPGS date needed

Postby Adam.NYC » Fri Mar 07, 2008 2:20 pm

These beautiful casseroles are marked for Martin Hall (Sheffield) and EPGS (electroplated German silver). My question is about the date of manufacture. Is there anyway to tell (within 20 year period?)

What is interesting is the device, shown below, for the handles to twist off to allow the lids to be used as additional serving pieces. Does this help date it? The engraving looks hand done, too. Is this important as to date? How about the number - 5750?

Thanks so much!

Richard Martin and Ebenezer Hall started using that "MH & Co in a sheild" mark in 1854.
They used this style of marks up to c.1897.

Thanks. I did see that information but I thought I could narrow it down.

Hi Adam-

The removable handle has been on this site before, I just do not know how to search for it. I remember it because, I thought "how ingenious". But I must say that I think that Patricks dating of between 1854 and 1897 is as about as close as anyone could posibly get. Perhaps you could check with the patent office, and see when that kind of handle was patented, and narrow it down from there. Let us know, I for one would be very interested in its exact year.

Good luck- Byron

Thanks, Byron. I was able to find a post on that subject, but the photos were gone and the question wasn't related to that part.

If I find anything further, I will return to this post.

Adam
