Special extra stamps WMF - G - OY and "d"

Postby SwissSilverBuff » Wed Jan 23, 2008 9:34 am

Hi

I can't make out what the G below the letters WMF in the main stamp means. To the left of the stamp is a OY which I've never seen before. About 3 inches away is a small "d" which is also a mystery to me. All of these marks are on the lower most rim.

Can anyone help decipher this extra marks?

Thanks,

SSB

Hello, the G is for Geislingen, a city in southern Germany where the company still resides today. Actually that is an OX for oxidized (blackened) decor, the I/O is for the standard plating process, the d is most likely not a WMF mark, but an addition by someone else, possibly a retailer. Best wishes, Bahner

Thanks,

Do any of these marks indicate when the piece was made? I'm guessing ca. 1900 but would be curious to know if there is any way to narrow the date down.

Hello, this type of beehive-mark was introduced in 1910, so the actual production date of this piece is 1910 and after, possibly as late as the 1920ies. Best wishes, Bahner

Thanks so much. I'd like say that I think it is simply marvelous that there are people like you in this world who are willing to volunteer their time sharing their expertise with people like me. It only adds to my otherwise strong appreciation of the "magic of silver".
