HELP REQ PLS IDENTIFYING ORIGIN & AGE OF STERLING SILVER HINGED BANGLE

Post by juniorj2012 »

Good Afternoon

Could anyone help me identify the origin and age of this beautiful old Sterling Silver Hinged Bangle?

Plain background with raised design of twisted silver wire.

It is Hallmarked on the tab of the clasp

Hallmark reads: 925 - Vertically
SAO
Import Mark (looks like sign for Libra) - these four stamped horizontally
.925 I believe the SAO and g are Common Control Marks?
g

Width: all the way around, very slightly over .75"
internal Diameter when closed: just short of 2.5"
Total weight: 29.31g - substantial
Had a secure safety catch

Many Thanks in advance.

Oh my goodness, why is everything so difficult?

I followed the instructions as advised right here on this website

Ok, I'll look at it again.

Thank You

Hi,
SAO is for Sfeffield Assay Office.
Bellow is from left to right the symbol for Sfeffield Assay Office, 925 fineness and date letter g for 2006.
There is no mark to indicate the country of origin.

The Libra import mark is the one used by Sheffield from 1906 to 1998 and SAO is the mark of the Sheffield Assay Office itself. This means that the importer did not register a mark of their own. The date letter is a bit obscure but I think that it might be the script G for 1974. The shape of the date letter punch means that it must be before 1975.

Thank You very much for the information

I do know that the lower case g is not a date letter. I looked up a lot of examples and found all of these SAO had the small letter g after them

This is why I mentioned that both of these had been described as common marks

I would think this item is older than 2006 - more on the other side of 1975 :) Shame I can't be more precise

Thanks again all

Common Control Mark is scale international convention mark, not seen in your bangle.
Letter g is date letter (not obligatory) and must be 1974.
