French? silver scarf pin

Could somebody help me decipher the origin and age and use of this item. It looks like somesort of pin used to tie together a scarf. It looks pretty old to me. It is marked with two small marks(hence my presumption it is French), one of which I've been able to decipher and fotograph. This is a head of a male with long hair facing right. The item also has several scratch marks, which are typical for pre 1800 items I believe. Any help is welcome. thanks in advance
