Need help with date and makers mark for locket please!

Postby scraphappymom » Wed Sep 05, 2007 4:57 pm

I've been able to figure out most of the hallmarks on this lovely locket - it's sterling silver and from Birmingham. I'm not sure of the date or the Maker's Mark - looks like WF ? The letter appears to be an old english style lower case g.

Also, do you think the colored design on the front is made of silver, or another material? I've seen tri-colored gold before but never colors in silver!

I'll try to add the pics here, but will post a link to my photobucket account in case it doesn't work. Thanks very much for any help you can give me with this!

That could be a mark used by Ward & Francis, Birmingham, England.
They are listed in my book of watch case makers.
These types of manufacturers often produced other small items such as lockets.
Can't see the date mark well enough to identify it.

Hi ScrapHappyMom-

Thats a pretty locket, does the date mark look like the 1898 "y" or maybe the 1881 "g" ? as seen here:

As for the color, maybe it is gold gilded, kind of looks like it.

regards- Byron

Both of you guys are great! Thanks very much for the info.

Byron, it does look more like the 1881 "g". I really appreciate the two of you providing me with some sources/pictures for the maker's mark and the dating!! So excited to have some more info on this.

I guess I won't know for sure if it is gold on the front, but it is pretty, isn't it?

Thanks again ~
