Is this a silver mark?

Postby Elisabeth » Sun Mar 11, 2007 10:16 am

I bought this chain and found this hallmark "8.92.5". Can anyone tell me what this means, please?

I wonder if the first letter that you describe as an eight might have been an "S' originally. That might make it a Scandinavian piece, but I'm not sure. Usually the "S" comes after the fineness numbers.

Don't know what country would mark it 92.5 for sterling.

Hope someone else has some ideas.
Pat.

Hi,
I'm sure the mark is to indicate 925 sterling. The catch type is often used on pieces made in northern India and I've seen it mostly on newer pieces from Nepal.
Regards, Tom
