Pocket Watch Help

Post by Griffin1875 »

Good afternoon.

I'm after a little help trying to establish the history of a pocket watch. As you will see from the photographs the only markings are within the outer case, there is a number 3879 26 with a little symbol above this, a number within a box 0935 with a bullet shaped symbol underneath this and 2 standing bears below this. I have looked through the forum and a thread mentions the bear has been Swiss with possible connections to be sold through Germany or Russia. any help or advice would be greatly welcomed.

Best regards
Richard

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Your pictures are not showing as you appear to be linking to them via your own desktop. I suggest that you try another image host. https://postimages.org is recommended (click 'Share', then copy and paste the 'Hotlink for forums' code to embed your images). Do not use Photobucket or Dropbox. Please embed your images rather than posting links and remember to use the 'Preview' button before submitting your post to check that you have done it correctly.

You didn't embed your first picture which is actually the one with all of the information:

Here we can see Swiss hallmarks for 875 (or better) standard silver in use until 1933. In addition there is a numerical mark showing that it is actually 935 standard silver. This value ensures that it can pass as sterling (925) in those countries where it is a silver standard.

Hi Phil,

Many thanks for the update, much appreciated, Is there anyway of gaining a makers name or date of production, or is that beyond the information provided.

There appears to be a maker's mark which could be HJ or #J in a skewed parallelogram. If you could identify that it might give you an approximate date range. Maybe one of our other contributors can identify it - I can't.
