Unidentifiable Date Mark

I can't seem to find a match for this date mark on a pocket watch of my grandfather's. I've checked several websites and books but have been unsuccessful. If someone has any idea then please feel free to reply.

This is Birmingham, 1888. The maker's mark may well be R.B for Robert Bragge, trading as the English Watch Company of Villa Street, Hockley, Birmingham & Heathfield Road, Birmingham.
