1820's Celtic cross

Postby samarca » Sun Oct 20, 2013 5:51 am

Hi Guys,

I found this item whiles with a friend who was doing some metal detecting and I think I have the year right as the 1820's due to the capital E and the other symbol from dublin. I would like your help in idenitfing the maker, I was thinking Smith & Gamble 1820 - 1833 just by the faint markings which look like they start with a S..

Pictures below, tried my best to get as close as possible.

If you need anymore please let me know, Thanks in advance

Hi Mark,

Welcome to the Forum.

I hope I don't disappoint you too much, but the date letter indicates the year 1946.

The maker's mark, 'S & S', a prolific maker of medals, watch fobs, etc. in the 1940's, has until recently been a mystery, but is now thought to be the Dublin business of Segal & Son.

That's fine Trev,

So we are saying its 1940's and from Dublin and makers Segal & Son.

Thank you very much, Will add it to my collection of finds with a note with it.

Great forum for future reference, I'm sure I will be back to test you guys, if not to correct me ;-]

Thanks again for your help

Mark
