Help with Finnish medal, marks and what medal was for please

Postby user701 » Sat Jun 15, 2013 4:18 pm

I came across a medal (which was described as a Christian medal) with marks for Finland, makers mark is GVR any idea who the maker is please and the town also.

I know it dates to 1908 (date on the front and date code C5 corresponds also to 1908)

What is the purpose of this medal (is it a Christian medal or for something else?), as the front has initials, the reverse has a name? etc

If it helps it has a yellow and red ribbon.

Many thanks for any help in advance.

I can't help with what the medal might have been for, but the maker is Gustaf Wilhelm Rothmann, active 1902-1924 in Savonlinna.

Here is an excellent site for looking up Finnish Gold & Silversmiths' Responsibility Marks.

Hope this helps!

Thank you, having the makers name gives me something to search on and may find what the medal was made for.

Thank you also for the link.

Looks more like a jetton than a medal. Anyway, it is engraved "Wiestinjuoksu" in Finnish meaning relay race (four guys running in turns with a sitck ;-)))). Maybe the four letters below it are the initials of the attendants, don't know.

Thank you very much Qrt.S that information is very useful in doing more searching, I did not come up with any information with the makers name.
