WW1 Nurses watch case.

Postby Jackster » Thu Mar 30, 2006 11:21 am

Hi I have just purchased this watch case and am after a little more information please. I think the 925 means its silver and the U means imported silver but do not know what the GS or t stands for. Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards

Kevin

925 is sterling silver. The stylised 'U' is the London import mark and the 't' dates it to 1914-15. Unfortunately I don't have a list of makers marks for that era. Best wishes, Mike.

Mike thanks for prompt reply, so I take it that the 'GS' is the makers mark then? if anyone else can help much appreciated.

'GS' is the importers mark for George Stockwell. He is listed in Priestly's 'Watch Case Makers of England' as a 'Foreign Agent' working between 1907 - 1918 from his premises at 16/18 Finsbury St., London, EC.

Stockwell's mark is particularly common on silver 'Trench' watch cases of the period. It looks as though he was just an importer rather than a proper casemaker; I have never seen one of his cases that was not an import.
