silver and enamel brooch maker's mark

Dear fellow forum members,

I have acquired a lovely little silver and enamel brooch with a fruitbasket design, and some lovely enameling. I however don't know who the maker is. I feel I've seen the piece somewhere else before as being a good piece. The piece is marked with a handengraved T and H with a Maltese cross in between, and with silver. in measures about 3 cm in width.

I believe that is an English piece. Let me see if I can find it in one of my reference books, it looks familiar to me, too.

Yes, it is English. That is the registered trade mark of Thomas Hopwood, 25-27, Branston Street, Birmingham.

Thank you very much for this info. Am I correct in thinking it will be 1920's-30's, or is this a later piece.

Hi Kasper,

I'll have to leave that to someone more knowledgeable with period design.

The business was established in 1852 and they were still in business in the 1930's at least. Their main line of business was Rolled Gold, imitation type jewellery. To my knowledge they never registered with an assay office.

I'll try to add them to the Some Birmingham Trade Cards and Advertisements topic within the next couple of days.
