Identification help please

Postby suz » Sun Aug 05, 2012 9:35 am

Hi,

I have a brooch which I believe is a luckenbooth brooch. I have narrowed this down to edinburgh but cannot trace the rest of the markings, it appears it may be 1698. Can anyone help please

Hi Suzy welcome to the forum.

From left to right. Scotland Edinburgh, the Thistle or fineness standard mark .925, Edinburgh date letter S I believe to be for the year 1899, J.R the maker’s mark unknown to me and the triple towered castle for the assay office of Edinburgh.

Hi Suzy,

Welcome to the Forum.

Yes, from the back, it does appear to be the traditional shape of a luckenbooth brooch. The date would be 1899, but the maker is a bit of a mystery, it appears that it may be James Robertson, but according to the Incorporation of Goldsmiths of the City of Edinburgh, he did not register until 1904. This may of course be an error, and perhaps a slightly earlier registration may have been overlooked.

Just wondering what the additional etched marks mean, how common they are and just a bit more background only the person who made it.
