Sterling Enamel Studio Piece - British or Pseudo-hallmarks?

Postby volpone » Wed Jun 17, 2009 4:32 pm

Hi all,

This sterling and enamel brooch has markings I can not identify. When I purchased it, I thought it might be by Norman Grant, but when it arrived, the marks did not match. They look like British assay marks and the maker's initials, "B.G."

The assay marks are as follows: lion rampant, what looks to me like the Edinburgh marks, and a lower-case x.

Any ideas on the hallmarks and maker?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

The Incorporation of Edinburgh site has that mark as Barbara Gun trading as Eclipse of Appin.

Thank you, Trev.

So, the assay marks are for Edinburgh? I couldn't find more current date stamps - are they now using the lion rampant for sterling? And do you know what year "x" is?

Thanks again for your help!

Hi,
Lion Rampant began in 1975, I think your X would be from 1997.

Barbara Gun entered her mark at Edinburgh in 1993, but appears not to have re-registered when due to, in 2003.
