Hi

I have just received this watch from a family friend as a token of gratitude! She said she bought it in Brighton ,UK from the Jewellery section called The Lanes as a gold watch Circa 18**. Its had a new face fitted some time ago.

On the outer watch casing. There is only one mark on the Fastener which is L6. On the inside of the casing where the movement sits is another quandary. The symbols read as follows:

Makers Mark: SD
Carat: 9 375
Age: K surrounded by a circle
Assay: a shield on its side with no coat of arms. I thought this might have been Chester, UK but was mistaken as all the UK shields have coats of arms and none are turned on their side.

I've attached some pictures. Sorry they arnt very good but you can guess the gist of the watch.

Thanks for your time once again

Colin

Hi Colin,

Welcome to the Forum.

As near as I can tell from your photo's, it looks like 1945 to me.

Hi Which assay office have you used as 1945 is a V?

If i could fathom out where the shield is from i could better date it.

I was meant to state 1884 not 1886

Looks like London to me, try and take a clearer photo' or failing that draw a picture.
Wristwatches as we know them were not invented until the turn of the last century, and the style of your watch looks very mid-20th Century.

Hi Colin,

Yes, London, (the Leopards Head is sideways), 9 carat, 1945.
Sorry, I can't help with the maker.
