Date of Charles Robbins Mark

Post by MyThoughtsExactly »

Hello,

Thanks to this site & other posts in this forum, I finally figured out what this half worn off mark is!

This is a Champleve Sterling Brooch made with the Lehigh University crest. Women were first allowed to attend in the graduate program in 1918. The first women graduates were in 1921, which. because it has a safety pin style clasp, is what I think this would have been made for.

I contacted the university & they said this might have been custom made, as they have no record of these being made for the university.

The first symbol is CMR, with the letters crossing over each other. The second is what I understand to be a sickle. The third is a bird.

Are there specific dates for when this mark was used?

I'd also really appreciate any more information on this brooch. The front is in perfect condition - really beautiful!

Was looking at the entry for Sterling Flatware Fashions which seems to imply that it may be from circa 1900 - 1910.

Hope this helps.

Rainwater shows those Robbins marks as in use circa 1900-1926, but I think more likely they came into use after 1912 when the firm became the ''The Robbins Co.', and have seen it on pieces that probably date as late as the '30s and perhaps even into the early '40s. Can't make out what the emblem on the front says, but that might help in dating too. Please see the dated ads on this page showing the Robbins marks: http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic ... 1&start=20

Thank you for the link! The piece on front is the Lehigh University crest with their motto. Women were first allowed (don't you love that?) in 1918. The first women to graduate did so in 1921. I was thinking this might be a graduation gift.

Anything more is always appreciated :)
