Hearts Ring with unknown 'U' hallmark

I have a ring of unknown origin: Welsh or possibly even colonial Malaysian??? Hence my confusion! It belonged to my mother who was born in 1942.

Hallmarks: serif 'U' with an arrow through it from right to left, and 'STERLING'

I believe that mark was used by the Uncas Manufacturing Company, Providence, Rhode Island. Founded by Vincent Sorrentino in 1911. Acquired Vargas Mfg. Company in 1998. Might still be in business today.
