ID sterling wing pin ( airline?)

Postby tallpedro57 » Wed Jan 02, 2013 3:02 am

I got these wings from a grandmothers jewelry box and want to ID it. IE airline pin? and age
the hallmark is a shield and says NEWYORK vertically and the word MEYER crossing the word NEWYORK sharing the :Y" like a crossword.
it also is stamped "sterling"

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

The mark is that of N.S. Meyer Inc. of New York, a supplier of badges and insignia to the US Government.

N.S. Meyer Inc. were established in 1868 and in business until 2000, when they were acquired by Vanguard, another well known supplier of military insignia.

I find these called WWII observer wings. They are really great.

The 'Observer' wings were introduced in 1921, discontinued in '49 (later reproductions were made, yours looks period to me) - this article should give some information on the wings, as well as on Meyer: http://www.anaspides.net/military/aviator_wings.html

thanks for all the great info, the web link was very informative. Now to track down who in the family this belong to.
PS: I was wondering why the clasp only opened about 45 deg and the web site explained it was part of the design for an original
Thanks,
Peter
