1920's sterling bangle/bracelet marked 'W' in shield - help!

Postby sterlinglover » Thu May 27, 2010 12:24 pm

Hi, I have this lovely dated twenties sterling bangle, but do not recognise the hallmark, can anyone help me know who this maker is? Also do the symbols around the bracelet have something to do with the maker? It is dated January 11,1921. Thank you all.

It says Wohelo in Alaskan Tsimshian letters for the Camp Fire Girls motto, Work Health Love. It was awarded to girls who had earned their Firemaker's badge. It's nice this has a date on it, there are others like it that date to the late 30's. The mark seems to be related to Camp Fire Girls but I've never found out more about it.

Your item is an official piece of Campfire Girls regalia that was supplied by the Campfire Outfitting Company which was an arm of Campfire Girls. The company was formed and initially funded by the Campfire Girls organization around 1920 so that the organization had complete control over what was supplied to its members in the way of standard insignias and such without having the burden of actually running the company in order to obtain the products they wanted.
