I recently purchased this small cloissonne box,I felt it was an interesting piece .
Any comments or opinions about it would be appreciated,it is quiet heavy, looks to have gold plating on the copper wires which I feel is unusual.
Size is 9.5x4.5cms

Hi Ag
many thanks for your thoughts, would be interested what you know about such boxes?or is this (China) based on anything in particular,or just a stab in the dark?
Regards Guido.

The rule of thumb;everything is made in China unless specifically proven otherwise.

Good Answer,not much info,
I have been reading about cloissonne work,
And it seems for many years even the experts
Are a bit confused as to by whom and when many objects were.
Unless signed, not all signed pieces are origial either.
It may be good if mine is Chinese and not Japanese(depends of date of manufacture of coarse)
Lot 437 -9th November Christies London
(admin edit - see Posting Requirements )
The Chinese have been making Cloissonne for many hundred years.
So it is probably not a bad thing if it was made there.
Although I still think mine is Japanese,
Maybe around 1880.
Regards Guido.

Re: small japanese cloissone box
Hi Members
I have come across these interesting images ,of cloisonne boxes from the second half of the fifteenth century,in a book by Sir Harry Garner ,Chinese and Japanese cloisonne 1962 ,Faber and Faber.
I feel there is some similarity in style with my box (pity images in black and white)
it would be interesting to know if these earlier boxes were in some way an inspiration for my box? and made at some later date in China or Japan.
I would be interested in members thoughts.
Kind Regards Guido.

Re: small japanese cloissone box
Hello Members
Not sure if members may be interested,The black and white image of box in last post ,came up for sale ,some time after my post ,I have attached the color image of the same box,Called "The Cunliffe box" after former owner Lord Cunliffe.
Very interesting for me to see the color version (not sure why background in black and white image, looked white)
Seems like my box ,may be Japanese 1880s made in the earlier Chinese style .
Regards Guido.
