Balinese Bowl

Postby JanGroen » Wed Mar 23, 2016 12:42 pm

Good Evening
I am trying to find out more info about this beautiful little bowl. I think it is from Bali and depicts Garuda the Hindu Bird god. It is 6cm high and 11cm in diameter. Can not find any hallmarks but it tested for at least 90% silver. Any information about it will be welcome.

Good evening
I have found similar patterned bowls online. Non with Garuda, but other gods. The ones online are larger and are known as Balinese Ceremonial Offering Bowls. They were hand made in the Early 20th Century. Wonder how it ended up in a small shop in a small town in Southern Africa. Do not seems to be a tourist piece. Maybe the reason it is without hallmarks is that it was not meant for export? Any other information will be helpful.

JanGroen,
Your guess that it's from Bali and is 90% silver may be absolutely correct. Another possibility is that it's from the city of Yogya (also spelled Jogja or Djokja) on the island of Java. Most silver items there are marked 800 (80%), but 90% was also produced.

Good evening
I also first thought of it being Yogya. But Yogya silver don't have images of Hindu gods and monsters on it. This makes sense as Javanese people are mostly Muslims and 90% of Bali are Hindus.

Good Evening

Took this to an expert to find out more. She said they were mass produced in the past and not very collectable/desirable . If they are that common where are the other ones that has been produced? Any comments will be appreciated.
